How To Tighten Ball Joints That Just Spin – EricTheCarGuy
How to tighten ball joints also works with tie rod ends or any other suspension part similar in design. The trick is to put the stud in a bind so that you can catch some threads, once you’ve done that and the fastener starts to tighten you can loosen up your ‘wedge’ and tighten it up the rest of the way.
I get asked about this a lot and hope you find this to be a good solution to this problem.

Awesome video. Thanks
Man i dont know if you will see this. But you just helped me out so fucking much. This worked like a charm. Oh and ill send you an award for the shortest help video out there
Thank you!!!! brought out the crowbar and got the nut properly torqued down….I started getting all pissed and cussing at my car thinking I broke something 🤣🤣
Your suggestion worked like a champ!
Thank you so much for a great solution to the problem. Your the best
A ratchet strap works good as well especially on tie rods.
No freaking kidding, I literally just got off the phone with my mom venting and cursing the damn tie rod! I just changed the inner, tried to put the tie rod end back on and the bolt just spins!!
Hang up, get on YouTube, see Eric the Car Guy, (Perfect-I like that guy), and the first thing you say! 🤣🤣🤣 Gold!
You saved me so much time. instead of the bar i used a jack. that little bit of pressure allowed me to tighten. Thank you!
8 years later, thank you eric 👌ðŸ‘ÂÂ
You the man. ðŸ‘ÂÂðŸ‘ÂÂ
Didn't work for my 05 Acura TL; MOMMA!!!
I couldn't pry between my lower control arm and the spindle the way Eric did, but simply lifting the LCA a couple inches with a jack did the trick for me, 2005 Civic.
Sweet my moma already knows im fu#ked up though. But thanks cause I was loosimg my mind on this upper control arm and I dont want to hold the rubber boot with pliers and destroy it. You are awesome man thanks.
Saved my butt !
Thanks for the ball joint one Eric!
Here I was about to go all Karen and complain about the "defective" new tie rod end I just bought.
Eric your a life saver as always.
Thank you for the SHORT video!! I can’t stand when I’ve got an issue and all I can find is 20 plus minutes of horse shit. Short sweet and to the point, thanks man!
Hey Erick, thanks brother . People is posting videos and for 30 minutes talk about the same subject making no sense…. That was simple and quick. Thanks
You are a dead-set-legend Eric the car guy!!! Thank you for all you automotive knowledge sharing – so helpful.
@EricTheCarGuy. Eric, I checked to see just how many channels addressed this issue. Not many. So on a 2006 Hyundai Tucson I could use the floor jack to put up pressure on the lower control arm, then tighten the stud & replace the cotter pin….
Life saver. Thanks.
Try this on a inner tie rod with a gearbox pitarm and frame in the way
So weird that I called my mom and told her how much I was a failure. Weird
thanks mate
My Acura thanks you for your wise words
So do I
I take it is the same with removal? My 83 ford f150 seems rust welded to the joint. Pickle fork not helping either.
And I am dirty after replacing pivot bushings, now trying to get the ball joints out 😡
Thank you, to me today, you are automotive jesus.
I'll try this tomorrow…moog makes their ball joints with a grade 8 lock nut and it just spins while I'm trying to tighten it. I appreciate you sharing this tip.
170000 miles can i juat tigteen ball joints to shut them up ?/
i swear i was just gunna call mamma but………now i aint gotta
Fuck yes!!!!
The nut on my ball joint is at the bottom, so that method didn't work. What you can do is Pry something between the lower control arm and the bolt, while you turn the nut
