How to clean a Mass Airflow Sensor. Mass Airflow Sensor cleaning can increase fuel economy, stop hesitation and stalling, and shut off your check engine light. This is a simple procedure and in this video I go in-depth about cleaning the sensor and I take readings from an OBDII scanner to show before and after cleaning the sensor.
A mass airflow sensor gets dirty because of oiled filters such as a KNN air filter, air filters that are not replaced often enough, and dusty roads (salt, sand, pollen, etc). Symptoms of a dirty MAF sensor are hesitation, poor idle, bad fuel economy, and stalling. You can also get a check engine light with codes P0100, P0102, P0103, P0104, and P0105.

Average Fuel Economy for the month before I cleaned the sensor: 17.5mpg
1 fill-up later: 18.97mpg
2 fill-ups later: 20.86mpg
3 fill-ups later: 19.10mpg
4 fill-ups later: 20.1mpg
5 fill-ups later: 19.13mpg

When are you gonna get a v8 f150 lol I had a ranger and your b4000 video helped. Lol anyway I like the way you make this seem easier and doable! Keep it up!
Looking at the timing advance it doesn't change much, on my Fiesta 2009 it goes up and down from 4-14°. Is that normal ? Of course at idle 🙂
can i use the MAF in a container of rubbing alcohol 70%
I got a hesitation and poor acceleration only in the daytime when it's hot at night the car runs fine I'm wondering if it's the maf sensor ðŸ¤â€Â
Hello chris. Thanks for giving information. I visited my mechanic from toyota. He cleaned MAF sensor with gasoline and brush. Will this malfunction the sensor. How to check if something bad happened to it. Please guide.
Does it always give error codes on OBD? Or can it be bad without any errors showing up?
Will cleaning it completely renew it ? Or close to it ?
Hey Chris i use a cotton swab to clean the sensor not too hard just a little bit before watching a video is that OK
I want to buy your Mazda Ford Ranger. It's obvious that you have taken excellent care of this truck. Thanks for your straight forward video without goofy back ground music or silly guys in rediculous outfits. I have used several of your videos for dyi projects. Keep up the great job.
I have a 2016 Nissan Versa. Car stalls but no engine code. What does appear is a wire with a wiggle lines in the instrument panel.
We dont have mass air flow sensor cleaner here in bahrain
Great straight forward video, thanks!
I have looked at other videos and yours is the most complete
Thank you
I can tell he’s from the DC area. The way he says be cos instead of be cuz.
Here is a tip I learned. When engine is hot and at idle. The MAF should be reporting close to what in liters your engine is. If its way off then you know you have a problem.
Wats your obd reader?
I haven't changed it yet but they want me to pay 2995 for the brand new air flow sensor and if I could use clean it that's going to be a super bonus thank you very much Chris
Hey Cris I have a Ford ranger six-cylinder 4.0 no power on takeoff I replaced the mass airflow sensor the idol sensor in the EVg The three things on top of the motor and the plugs still no power on takeoff with no money and I’m about to lose my company because I can’t figure it out to get to the customers do you have any ideas I’ve been told maybe the Cadillac converter maybe the fuel pump when I replaced the fuel filter forgot to undo the gas cap end it was a lot of pressure there so I’m kind of thinking it’s not the fuel filter no check engine light did I mention I change the spark plugs one didn’t look like the others just dry got any hints ideas desperate in Florida ha
i have such a crush on chris <3 could explain cars to me all day
Thanks Chris, my 20yr old maxima has never been touched by a dealership except for recalls.
Could you do a video on how to eliminate the car dealer and buy directly from the factory?
Chris, we're you ever so busy cleaning you MAF that you completely missed dinner? I did. Great ðŸ‘ÂÂvideos, I've learned a lot.!!!
Can you safely clean an air intake temperature sensor?
Well Done!!
Thanks Chris I'm doing this service on my 2007 Toyota Tundra today, the error code is P0104 and the check engine light is on. Hoping I can pick up an extra MPG or 2.
Thanks Chris for being so detailed with your demonstration. I am a newbee when it comes to doing car care. After watching your video I can do it myself! THANKS 4/09/2021
Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Highly recommend cleaning the Mass Airflow Sensor.
I got insane results after plugging intake holes the previous owner drilled and cleaning the sensor.
Good tyre pressure helps a bit too but this definitely yielded the biggest improvement.
Can cleaning the mass air flow sensor also fix a p0113?
