Here we have part 3 of the 2001 GMC Sonoma Engine replacement videos. Many of you have asked about what’s wrong with this engine. In this video we find out as much as we’re going to find out about that very question as I end up pulling one of the connecting rod bearings along with one of the main bearings. You’ll have to watch the video to see how that turned out. Here’s some useful links for you.

Hey I have a question for you can you reply back please
I know this is an old video, but that distributor gear part that turns the oil pump, how do you get it out. Mine is loose, but will not come up.
I have the exact same truck except it's a 2002 and I was planning on rebuilding my engine this summer so this video is excellent! I know it's 4 years old but thanks for the video!
hi Eric , on your video with the sonoma you torch the exhaust bolts to loosen them. i dont have a torch , can I pull out the exhaust manifold with exhaust pipe attached by disconnecting from cat converter ? and pull it out through the engine compartment ?
that plate on back of the head is actually for easo of clenaing when overhauling the head
HAY MY LIFTERS ARE KNOCKING WHAT DO U RECOMEND A NEW ENGINGE OR JUST NEW LIFTERS?
This will probably never get answered but, if the issue was the rod/crank bearings couldn't that all be replaced from underneath?
That plate on the back is for a thermostat the cavalries the same engine that's where the thermostat goes on the cavy motor.
How much for the brand new engine?
that bitch has head studs from the factory #racecar
the 2 nut method haha
If this where my engine I would have bought the solid pan gasket made out of rubber.
I wonder if you could install a knock sensor on the front door? I can never hear when people are here.
When did everything go metric on domestic cars?
What? You're not going to taste the oil? What kind of gearhead are you?
If they're paying for a crate motor, I'd upgrade it to something more powerful
what will iner ghange  with  2.2.5
Those plastic oil pump drive sleeves are the worst. That is what broke and killed the 4.3 V6 in my 2000 Blazer. There are metal ones that are available aftermarket.
I'll never, ever, like cork gaskets.
Fuck those things, why they still exist is beyond me
Ahhhh an INLINE 6 engine.
Is the word gasket starting to sound funny to anyone else?
Congratulations! Where are you from?ÂÂÂ
this was exactly what I needed to see. Went to get a new catalytic convertor and was told, cracked exhaust manifold, head gasket and a bunch other crap. Started into it and got stuck on taking some things off. Couldn't find all of the bolts for intake and fuel rail. Now I can replace the sensors, because most of the stuff will be off to get to them. Great video. Thanks.
My last project was struts and shocks on my camaro, and the upper control arm  ball joint, one side had a crown nut that came off with little to no trouble, but putting it back on, it was rotating the stud. My dad and I had to use a tap  and file to clean and sharpen the threads on the stud and inside the nut. Taps are a very useful tool!!
Know nothing about cars but I couldnt help but watch..
why a cast iron block? also I would have gone the extra mile and port and polish the cylinder head to help with fuel economy and power lol
Wow, that two nut method for removing studs is perfect!
cork gaskets are okay???? I would never trust it.
one word of advise an time u work on a clutch or any one of its opponents wear a mask cause it has asbestos init including the dust
LOOK to the ——–> right!!
For safety sake please get an engine stand!! Get one cheap at harbor freight!! #staydirty
Melling box usually=oilpump??? #staydirty
MMMMMM, nice fresh new engine.
rs
time for a 4.3 swap!
Hey Eric,
I wanted to ask you about the part where you are cleaning the oil pan… Would the solvent have eaten up "the stuff" during cleaning instead of wire brushing it off, or at the very least losen it up? If anyone else wants to chime in, I'd be happy too.
what does chunks of oil in an oil pan mean? Was it just never changed thoroughly?
13:40 how you took the bolts off superfast. More editing like that!
Oh, the little hole actually I think that is an egr.
13:47 the plate stops coolant from coming out the other end of the cylinder head.
I reckon it was a failure in the lubrication system, cheap oil/ or filter, bad oil pump, or something similar.
I love Eric's puns and little jokes. Makes for not only a great learning experience, but also very entertaining. Keep the awesome videos coming!
I've been a mechanic for almost thirty years, it's rough on the body. Power tools help a lot, but at the end of the day my back, shoulders, and hands are pretty sore.
If you dont have a thread chaser you can get a bolt of the same size and pitch and cut 2 lines down it either side and rin it through.
The plate on the back is an EGR passage. My 98 has the old EGR setup.
should put a SBC in 🙂
Eric you make that job look so easy!
