How to fix a fan that doesn’t work on low. If your interior AC/ Heat fan is not working on low, or one of the fan settings isnt working, then you probably need to replace the blower motor resistor. This video will go though all of the steps and give you some helpful tips and tricks! I also show the blower motor resistor wiring diagram in case you need to put a new pigtail on the resistor (like I did because it melted).

Great video once again Chris. One suggestion i would solder those connections to the new pig tail since you want the least amount of resistance as possiable. I would solder the connections and use heat shrink to seal the connextions not electrical tape that will come apart in time because of the heat from the engine conpartment. Either way great job on the repair video.
Hi,
I bought my Caravan and it came with wind speed 4 not working.
I replaced the blower motor resistor and it worked for less than 1 month, and speed 4 stopped working again, I thought the part I changed could be defective. Then I bought a new blower motor resistor and again in less than 3 weeks speed 4 stopped working.
The other speeds work normally.
Any suggestions as to what could be causing speed 4 to stop working?
Thanks
Hey Chris can you make a video on how to replace battery terminals properly
Thanks Chris. My blower works intermittently on all speeds summer and winter, so this video tells me it is not the resistor. Thanks, I'll keep troubleshooting.
Makers secure dealerships get work since car sales alone isn't enough. Japanese car makers (Ford/Mazda collaborate) also make own parts. Defects secure future sales of both parts and cars. Rust happens with moisture leaks. I would add sealant around part where it bolts on. And slightly stagger connectors less bulk
How do you know what the color of the wire is on the new part?
I prefer shrink tubing rather than tape. It seems to keep the moisture out better.
I have a little kid with multiple colored tape. So whenever I run into something like that that's all one color wire I can use the colored tape to label all the wires
Who’s here in 2021
This video gets the credit!, Thanks ChrisFix!
I like to solder my wires. I trust soldering a lot better that but connectors
Thanks again Chris. I'm doing the same job on a 2002 Buick Century but I also have a 2000 Ranger. Great reference video. Also like the way you explain how a resistor resists. Hence the name.
once the resistor is changed out will i here the fan under the hood click on right now my fan come on when i start the car and don't go off until i shut the car off
1989 dodge dakota. resistor R&R for video, thanks
Sir why my resistor black is allway damadge what is the rason? Please
Love your video…another good product to use on the actual pins of the connectors is Petrox, it is used to help prevent corrosion and improve connectivity on metal contacts/pins.
Why can't they color code the replacement wiring harness?
I have a 2003 Toyota highlander and the heat and ac want come on when I turn the knob..what could the problem be
Chris, I always use your videos when I have a problem with a vehicle and have been successful until I replaced the resistor and pigtail on my '03 Ford Explorer Sport Trac. Once everything was completed, I tested my work but nothing changed. The fan would only blow in the high (#4) position. What else could it be?
BTW, you're the best and my "go to" when I have an issue!!
Well done. Simplified yet explanatory all at once. Nice.
I actually fixed mine by replacing the fuse of the resistor!
God bless Chris
If this is "easy" I hate to think what is hard. 😂
I am going to do this by myself!!! I hope it works out okay for me!!! It is freezing outside and my heater decided to stop working today!!!
You Da Man CHRIS, I'm working on my brother truck now. TUBING for what I'm looking 4. Your description of its functions help immensely.
I'm AC n HEAT mech no Auto. LoL
Muy buen video
good job….
for me its right behind the control system, like right behind where you adjust the air and climate control. so i can take that off and boom
why would they put it under the hood, on my Nissan its under the glove box next to the motor. so it is not exposed to the elements. great video and general howto
You know I like these kind of videos if you have hands-on experience then you can do your own work especially as simple as something like this and you don't get ripped off by a damn mechanic
I've used vaseline in place of dialectic grease. Main goal is to prevent oxidation.
Thanks for the vid I just replaced mine on my 2004 ford ranger works great now
Chris, you're the man. Great job. Thank you. By the way, for clarification, since the car's wires are color-coded, do I have to match them with the pigtail's black wires?
Your videos are so good and to the point I would not be surprised if your nickname is the "Professor".
Your heater video popped up on my suggestions…I figured my blower motor doesn't work and my parents blower motor resistor (I had no idea what that was until I watched your other video) was shot so I watched it and it lead me here.
Your videos are great! Thank you for making them!!
good, informative vid.
Thx. Chris, great video. Helped me get my fan working again on my '99 Ranger 4.0L. Just wish my hands weren't so darn big. This would have been even easier!
uuhhmmm the crimp connectors are made to cripm while exposed to head but you dind crimp
I always replace that with the blower motor
Supposed to use a 'heat gun' on those yellow crimps… Not just electrical tape.
Thank you, sir. Your help is much appreciated!
Hey chrisfix, could a bad blower motor or resistor be the cause of my fans intermittently turning off in HOT weather?
Those crimp connectors come with a heat-shrink sleeve. You heat them up and they shrink, just in case someone has the same connector.
When chrisfix said “I don’t know why they can’t just design something better†about Ford and Mazda. That hit lol. They make some really easy tasks really difficult. Ford more so (just personal experience). But removing a fuel filter or MAF sensor or even trying to remove anything from FORD is SO HARD
What if the radiator fans turn on only when the AC is on?
