just wanted to let you know ive seen you're comments about painting the anodes, and we will fix that up next time we are out at the boat. We were following what was done before and apparently that was the wrong way. I thought all they needed was a clean connection between the metal they were protecting but after doing research its clear they'll do better without paint on them, easy fix!

The props are hard to turn because the shaft is supported by a "water lubricated" rubber bushing. When they are dry they are very difficult to turn.
Please don't paint your zinc's it will stop them from working

Hey everybody, don't paint the zink!!!!! I served on submarines during the Vietnam War.
One of the toughest jobs during patrol prep, was crawling through the boats superstructure (turtleback), and changing out the many zink bars along the hull. They need full contact with the seawater to be effective in limiting erosion of the pressure hull.
Glad to see you guys removed the paint from your zink anodes!

anodes… just think of a magnet in an oil pan but it's done electro-chemically in water.
As a car junkie, were you not tempted to try ceramic coating the boat? Or even playing around with a Plasti Dip? 😂
The anodes a there so the salt water would eat at that then the other metals on your boat

ok a lot of comments by boaters on zinks. The mystery of the tight shaft is IMHO due to the packing in the hull penetration stuffing box there is friction there to prevent water leaking in through the penetration. After years of tightening to stop leakage it is maybe shot. I would take the time to repack the penetration while in drydock especially if you have no history on maintenance of previous owners. that packing is lubricated by slight leakage of water. no leakage = no lubrication and likely lots of friction and heat generation some stuffing boxes actually have water connections. The exterior support bearing is held in a support strut and is normally called a Cutlass bearing Lubricated with water also. Good call on the set screws

ok so this is why you should never paint the zincs. when two types of metal are submerged in water (especially sea water) the metal dissolves and forms metal ions. these ions then attract ions from other metals near by, as the metal gives away its ions it corrodes and gets weaker. this can be counteracted by using a tird weaker metal also known as a sacrificial anode. which is, as the name suggests, used to give away its ions instead of the ions of the more important compnents such as rudders and shafts 9which need to be exposed and unpainted to minimise friction). essentially the metal ions in the water are held occupied by the weaker ions that they pull away from the weaker metal instead of pulling away at the stronger metals. painting the anodes and thus blocking the electirc bond between the sacrificial anodes and the sea water means that the metal ions will pull away at the more important meal components rather then the sacrificial ones.
im not an expert but that is a basic overview
for all the engineers in the comments telling him how badly hes damaging the boat i would expect more dislikes
Change the bearings now. Most yards have a tool that you do not have to pull the shafts to change them. If they don't find one that does.
Just leave paint on the bolts for the anodes. Leave the zinc bare.

I am just curious, what are you going to do too offset the weight loss to keep the boat in trim/ i think the boat will be stern light and bow heavy as well as riding higher in the water . This may make the boat poor to handle as well as top heavy and prone to rolling in heavy swells.
