On this PowerNation Extra, Marc and Tommy from Detroit Muscle explain why, if you decide to modify your muscle car, long tube headers might be the way to go if you’re looking for that extra bit of power. The scavaging effect, which is what gets you the extra power, is possible with shorty headers but just more pronounced on the long tubes.

  1. Typical gains are 0-10% in max power. Various gains to the torque curve. Sometimes higher low end torque is the only improvement with no change in top end. Other times you loose low end torque for a small peak hp change. Cam-size seem to affect the results alot.
For many engines youre better off just porting and gasket match the stock manifolds.
But in some cases you do gain alot. Problem is how to know? Considering the cost and work involved its a mod that is hard to justify based on guess work..

  2. A key note here is that different header designs, lengths, and sizes will change your power band. Short headers will generally perform better for low end power, while long tubes will make more power up top. Mid length headers, especially Tri-Y designs, will be great for all around performance.
