After some incidents of electric cars being too quiet and sneaking up on people, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration made a regulation that they have to make noise when driving at low speeds. But they may have to kill that regulation after President Trump signed an executive order in January requiring agencies to cut costs that are associated with enforcement, Jalopnik reported. And on NHTSA’s list of 6 areas for deregulation, requiring sound at a minimum speed was right there at the top.
As of right now, electric and hybrid car manufacturers have until September 1, 2019 to add noise to cars when they’re driving under 19 mph. NHTSA says the regulation could prevent 2,400 pedestrian injuries a year. What do you think, does the regulation make sense? Or do you not care if a Prius sneaks up on you?
This week on PowerNation our 4 shops have some handy takeaways you could use on your builds. Plus Katie will feature this beautifully restored 1949 Chevy pickup named ‘Ol 49 that’s been passed down from one generation to the next. Owners Jo and Adrean Shelton restored the truck in Jo’s dad’s memory. They turned to The Hot Rod Shop in Corinth, Mississippi to transform the 3/4 ton flatbed into a more modern classic truck in about 9 months. After lots of body work on the steel body, they dropped in a GM crate 350 engine that rolls on American Racing Wheels and Goodyear rubber. The bed is Oak with a Jacobean stain finished off with polished stainless steel strips and bolts. Jo chose the PPG “Carbon Black Metallic” paint color. The interior is two-tone with Charcoal and Ruby leather filled with all the creature comforts, done by M & M Hot Rod Interiors. Also this week Team Summit NHRA Funny Car racer Tim Wilkerson will have a tip on picking fuel cells. It’s one full block of tech so make sure you join us.

The problem is newer ICE cars have become almost EV-like quiet when at crawling speed. Your can still hear a Tesla. What you hear are the tires. But you really should be looking anyways.
You know none of my deaf friends have ever been hit by a car. Honestly I just think people, both the pedestrians and the drivers, should pay full attention. Besides the auto-braking features that are becoming standard in cars have this covered.
an industry group can do that better than the government…don't want your political opinion, just want car news
We were taught to do this as children… "stop, look both way's, then cross the road"
Take you're face away from your phone and pay attention to the world around you or it wont last long.
And to those of you that will argue that it will make car's "Safer", iv seen people walk out into the middle of a busy street just to get hit by a Diesel truck, if you don't know, Diesel's aren't exactly quiet and most you can hear coming a mile away.
It's a bill created by idiots to protect idiots.
I'm all for eclectic cars making some noise at low speeds, otherwise their likely to get a bad rep as "the silent killers"!!! Hell their not being asked make them beep like a dump truck backing up.
