General Motors has made the announcement it plans to go 100 percent electric earlier this week, according to NBC News. As of now GM only offers the Chevrolet Bolt EV but there are plans to add two others in the next year and a half, with at least 20 scheduled for the line-up by 2023. The company is also developing a new truck platform powered by hydrogen fuel cells, named Surus which is short for Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure. GM isn’t alone with this announcement. All Volvo models launched after 2018 will use either hybrid or pure battery-electric drivetrains. Volkswagen AG every model sold by its various brands like Audi, Bentley, and Lamborghini will be offered with at least one battery-based drivetrain option.

But GM said it’s taking it a step further. The goal is to abandon the internal combustion engine entirely. At some point in the future, all of its products will draw power either from batteries or hydrogen. Last year, all forms of electrified vehicles accounted for not even 3 percent of the U.S. new vehicle market so the question now is will consumers accept this change?

Make sure you tune into this week’s PowerNation as all four shops have real-world practical tech you can use, plus Katie will feature one red hot gorgeous custom ’54 Vette that was a 2017 Ridler Great 8 award winner. Owner-builder Larry Griffey of Larry Griffey’s Hot Rods & Restorations will share his vision of the “motor-rama” Corvette he thought GM should have built.

In a 6 year labor of love, he did lots of body modifications to get the stance he wanted and dropped in an LS-1 with an Edelbrock supercharger making around 580 horsepower. That striking color is a three-stage Matrix paint called “Soul Red”. Pro Auto Interiors handled the interior and it is, of course, Great 8 quality. He named it “Transitions” because of all the changes it’s been thought. By the way, this is Larry’s 2nd Ridler Great 8 award winner, amazing work for a small Knoxville, Tennessee shop!
