A while back we reported that Ford and GM were working together to produce two transmissions for the price of one. Ford agreed to produce a 10-speed gearbox for both automakers to use while GM would share the nine-speed it designed.

But now, Ford has decided to not use GM’s nine-speed transmission and instead use an eight-speed transmission. Ford said the decision was because GM’s nine-speed didn’t provide enough of a fuel economy improvement to justify the extra cost and weight of the added gear. GM is happy with the nine-speed and uses it in its vehicles.

  1. Why collaborate? It's not going to change anything between the big three. Ford just need to stick to Ford. GM needs to stick to GM. Fiat/Chrysler just needs to stick to………….Fiat/Chrysler?

  2. that's not really "shooting it down" is it? Essentially ford are saying the "benefit cost more than we wanted to spend for that benefit"

  3. Better has nothing to do with it. The GM version was supposed to fit Fords and it does not without modification or adapter. That is why Ford said no.
