You think Trans Am and your mind kind of automatically thinks of the Bandit and Burt Reynolds. So while the Burt Reynolds Edition Trans Am were coming out we asked him what kind of person is cut out for a Trans Am, this is what he had to say.

“I love George Hamilton but I can’t see him in a Trans Am,” was the first person Reynolds brought up.

He said there are certain people that can pull driving the car off and they’re all studs. He also said he would’ve taken Carey Grant if he wanted one. However, Burt said Grant told him he could “never get away with one”.

Reynolds then goes on to tell us a story about him and Grant when they headed to the horse races. Two great legends that will never be forgotten.

  1. In July of 2002 I had a choice of a black 2002 Pontiac Firehawk and a 2002 WS6 Trans Am Bandit conversion nebulously said to be located 'somewhere in Delaware' by a dealership manager. The Firehawk, in Fairless Hills, Pennsylvania, at a dealership, was on display on a drive-up platform and after thinking about it, mostly nonstop, for forty-eight hours I bought it.

At the time, with what computer resources were available, I had three dealerships looking for these cars for me and the one that fell into my hands was supposedly the last black Firehawk east of the Mississippi. I prized this vehicle highly for a couple years then foolishly sold it. End of story.

  2. Wrote this as a tribute years ago…As we are flying into the City of Melbourne, we see all the wonderful sights and sounds. The Land Lords the Aborigines and the vast track of land and animals. Steve Irwin’s Croc Center, the ocean, the sailing, the surfing.

It’s the night before the race in the pit area and our Drivers are all there.

Burt is in his Cobra, messing around a bit, doing burnouts as our drivers watch.

Just then five local Rat Rods drive up and circle Burt. Their headlights on and fire is shooting out of open headers. In the glare of the headlights you can see flashes of color from the cars that are painted. A flash of gold metal flake, Candy apple red, flat black and grey. They all stop side by side of each other; engines now at idle. Thump…Thump…then off. Rat Rod club leader stands up in his car. The gold metal flake one open wheeled Roadster. He’s got skinny tires up front and big wide meats on the back. He is dressed in new denim blue Levis and a white T-shirt. Camel cigarettes rolled up in his T-shirt arm sleeve. Hair slicked back 1950’s style. -Burt – “Look everyone its John Milner from American Graffiti.”
Bad Billy returns Vic hears this and has a sort of flashback to when he found “Bad Billy” Vic pulls his Dads Pick up with the 32 Ford tied to the rear bumper up onto the main dirt road. Down the road a bit he sees a bit of a wide spot to pull over into. He wants to fix the tow job up right as it was a fast hook up to get out of there. He pulls over and spots a sign on the wall, Dino’s. Vic sees a few people inside the small room and hears Les Paul playing guitar over the radio. He starts to work on the tow job. The owner walks out to see what’s going on. – Kookie- “What’a ya have kid? What in the, this is real Nervous.” That brings out some of the others. They all look shocked too. Roscoe “How in the hell did you get that car?” –Vic “That old man down the road gave it to me” –Kookie-‘That mushroom got smoggin’ in the noggin’” –Vic “I know what you mean he’s a crazy old coot” –Jeff “Did he tell you anything about the car or its original owner?” –Vic “No, Man I am just glad to be upright” –Kookie-“Well, I’ll play like a pigeon and make with the King’s jive. The best we can figure out is that old man worked in the chromium mine and the air in there buzzed him to Germsville crazy. Some just say it was bad booze and a weak brain. Anyways his dreamboat came into some money from family back east in Antsville. They felt sorry for her being with that poor fool. She went and bought that chariot new in 1932 and was going to get her man and endsville this joint. When she showed up with the new chariot the old crazy fool thought a rich boyfriend gave it to her. He ran her off without her chariot. Then he ran it down into that ditch not knowing how to drive. It only has about a hundred miles on can’t be more than that. Some of these mushroom people say the dremboats real name is Dawn Powell the writer” Vic “Well, Thanks ah.. –Kookie- “Names Kookie and this puts the topper on a dark seven” -Vic-“ Well sorry about that Kookie, Thanks again” -Kookie-“ Keep the eyeballs rolling on these roads” Vic has fixed the tow job up and is ready to go. Getting back into the Pick-up he waves at the group of men watching him. Vic looks into his rearview mirror as the little town disappears from view. I mean really disappears even before he tops a small hill and drops down the other side. He lets out a breath he did not know he has been holding since he first stopped for his rest break. –Vic “Whew, What kind of name is Cholame for a place?” This was late 1940 and by the time September 30th, 1955 rolled around many more would know of this little place and its lonely sad road. And the intersection of 41 and 46 is near where James Dean lost his life and Porsche. Someday we might get the real story, but some say. The Car and Driver that killed James Dean had just passed a slower car. This was just before the curving turnoff to the left onto 41. Now in the wrong lane the killer driver is looking to make a high speed turn and avoid the slower car he just passed that might also want to go up 41. But while checking to see 41 is clear of traffic he has not seen James Dean. The killer driver while still in the wrong lane he sees the low sitting not speeding Porsche finally but it’s too late. Vic snaps backs to now.

    – JC – “What’s that Lil’ Bastard mate English or American?”

Rat Rod members, both guys and girls laugh.

    – Burt – “Well John
    – JC- Names JC – Burt- “Well JC, LiL’ Bastard was James Deans Porsche. This is a 427 Ford Cobra, and you’re right it’s the best of both England and America. Maybe you’ve seen the tail lights before?”

    – Isky – “Sure we have, just before we pass’m all.”

    – Burt – “Dreams don’t count”

    – Pappy – “How many horses under there?”

    – Burt – “Somewhere past 600.”

    – AK – “Thought you said, dreams don’t count, mate?”

    – JC – “Care to prove it?”

    – Burt – “What do you have in mind?”

    – JC – “Race out to Spirit Peak and back.”

    – Burt – “How far is that?”

    – Isky – “That’s our short fun run, 10 miles round trip.”

    – Pappy – “Unless you’re late for your nap?”

    – Burt – “With your girlfriend” (said very softly)

    – AK – “What was that?”

    – JC – “So, you up for it?”

    – Burt – “Any of you old enough to have a driver’s license?”

    – JC – “I’ll be doing the racing; straight down this road can’t miss it.”

Jim Rockford stops Vic from stepping forward to stop the race.

    – Jim – “Let’m go.”

Pappy jumps out of his car taking his girlfriends sweater off her shoulders for a starting flag, raises it up then drops it down.

    – Pappy – “GO!”

Off they go, side by side, a Cobra and a wild gold metal flaked 1923 T Bucket Roadster. That looks like something Big Daddy Ed Roth would be proud of.

Shifting hard and looking each other over. The Cobra pulls away, the blacktop turns to dirt, the open wheeled Roadster is right on Burt’s tail, all of a sudden in the headlights, Kangaroos everywhere. Burt slows, JC steps on it.

    – JC – “Seen this before mate.”

The road heads up a narrow canyon with a river and cliff walls switching sides. Out of the canyon come the racers JC still leads. Up ahead in the full bright Moon light we can see Spirit Peak. The turnaround is a big banked dirt turn.

Far off to the side there on the top of the real Spirit Peak. We see the Aborigines with their fires. They all look on and one smiles at the racers. Back down the peak Burt slides a bit wide and just clips a big rock. The racers trade the lead on the way back.
Just before they get back to the pits they see a very large old classic convertible car full of girls headed to a retro dance, dressed from the 50’s, They have a flat tire. Burt is just ahead by a car length. JC hits his brakes to take a look, the girls swarm all over him and his car.

    – Burt – “Cross the finish line first boys (as he waves) then it’s time for the Betty’s and the Champagne.”

Burt finishes first and the Rat Rod club takes off to find their leader.

    – Jim – “Did you get to use 4th gear at all?”

    – Burt – “Just one time for a couple of seconds.”

Two of the other racers notice the damage to the rear wheel. That could also mean suspension or frame damage. Vic walks up to Burt’s car.

    – Vic – “I guess that smile tells the story.” – Burt – “It’s good to have it back. Thanks, Vic.”

NEXT DAY – RACE DAY……I miss so many of these men now they were the real deal…

  3. John Wayne even drove a black TA in a 70s movie. Sold my 68 GTO to keep my TA, always had one since I bought my first one in highschool. It doesn't feel right not having one. Only thing is I always wanted a 70-73, got the 73 and now regret selling the 77&78 t top cars. They just don't belong on earlier cars and once you had them they're missed. You even get used to wet seats, always had my plastic in case.
