  1. It's funny (to me) that the AMC sixes are so similar and yet act so differently. The 232 is a peppy engine that loves to rev. That's probably the reason they used 232's in several racing cars – they are essentially a baby stroker.

    The 258 on the other hand has a much longer stroke. It makes a lot more torque but it is a much lazier engine. I mean, you can hop either up….. but stock for stock…. the engines run completely differently.

  2. That's a 7 main bearing well constructed engine!! Do it justice.Take it back apart put in a forged steel crank,heavey duty everything,a hotter cam, more carburetion,shave the head and add a centrifugal supercharger the see what it will pull.

  3. yall are running out of carb. shes going too lean up top. personal experience with these motors is that if you bump it up to a 550ish cfm carb and dial your jets in youll probably get over 175hp with this combo. wanna shoot for 200hp? dont be scared to bump the CR up closer to 10:1 and be prepared to only use 90octane or higher gas.

  4. How sad. You said it was a Dual-Port intake, then you put on an open spacer. That just negates the benefits of the Dual-Port. All cylinders now draw from both upper and lower ports, from all four barrels. Bye-bye torque! Beautiful cam choice, though.

This would be a great motor for the old ramblers…..not as heavy as the v-8's, would work good with that trunnion suspension all amc's had in the 1960's…..may be with a bore job to the cylinders, you could crank over 200 horse…would like to drop this little I-6 in my old rambler american with a ford 8 inch rear I swapped in.

  6. yall completely messed up this build. i love your videos but the space should have been a 4 hole. the primary side and secondary side MUST BE ISOLATED FROM EACH OTHER AT ALL TIMES. thats why there are 2 intake runners. from what i saw, you used an open spacer which killed your flow some due to the intake runner separator. do it again with a 4 hole spacer and watch the torque go even higher.

    again, i love yalls videos. just caught a blooper on this one. =)

  7. This brings back memories of my 1976 CJ7 with the 258ci 6 cylinder. I had the head milled 60 thousands and added headers. All this while I was in the Navy stationed in Greece. In 1976 I picked up my new Jeep in Germany and drove it back to Greece. I miss my Jeep.

  8. powerglide? What ignition- ford works good studs on the cap 205 duration if you do not have 300 pls lobe lift you got took what head what year dual port old school how was the oil pump? use a 998 trans with the double wrap band, even lock up

  9. I don’t understand why they didn’t go with a 4.0 head in combination with the cam why would you need a 4bbl carb on such a restrictive head their actually losing power carb is too big head is junk and the cam and aftermarket intake is a waste on that 4.2 head

  10. California HATED the AMC 258 I-6. This engine was pre FI so it had a carb.
    That carb was the cause of the 258 failing more emissions test than not.
    Mech had to tinker & tinker & tinker w that carb to get the 258 to pass the
    emissions test. Thats why the day Chrysler acquired AMC they trashed the 258
    & substituted their own 4.0L FI I-6. The cheering from the Jeep community was
    DEAFENING.
