This video chronicles what I went through to diagnose a whining noise coming from the 10 bolt (8.5” 30 spline) differential of my 1990 C1500 truck (GMT400/OBS). The noise has been there ever since I installed a new carrier and gears last year.

I cover checking backlash, measuring pinion depth, bearing inspection, gear tooth patterns, and fluid inspection.

I hope you find this information useful!

31 thoughts on “What’s That Noise in My Differential?”
  1. Come clean, old bearings for set up….you set the pinion crush wrong and could have used the old bearings for set up. Differentials are the black art of mechanic repair world. Lots of guys with decades of experience have no idea how to do it right once and/or with consistency.

  2. My Old hiace van going on ascent moving too slowly som body tell want to change pinion 8/39 it’s right or not

  3. Going thru a 2001 Silverado rear end right now. It is the open rear end and the smaller bevel gears both had most of the teeth breaking off the outer edge. Your video was a big help in what to look for and what to expect. Thanks

  4. I use the Yukon "super carrier shim kit" and "crush sleeve eliminator" whenever I can on gear installs. You can dial that backlash in where you want. (yes I prefer the tight end of the spec) And no more finger crossing while setting pinion preload.

  5. I have 4runner 2006 shaking at 25 mph when accelerate slowly but with strong accelerate no shake at all. Do you know what might be the problem? Thanks indeed

  6. Thank you very much for such an informing video. Nowadays, I am having the same problem with 2010 Forester XS 4EAT and very much scared of damaging the transmission. We ll see what’s up with the ring and pinion tomorrow, but in worst case scenario i guess I am gonna go with a new set of ring and pinion (even though that set is also very expensive). I still wonder if it is possible to fix it with replacing the bearing and races (if ring and pinion is fine) only. I will let you know…

  7. Replaced my diff after watching your original video and had the same noise
The gear set is currently Richmond excel but if I end up swapping the gear set again I’m just taking it to the shop to have it done because I’ve had it with the rear end project
Thanks for your informational videos and updates though your knowledge is definitely appreciated

  8. Great man, great display of patience and not giving up, you are blessed with a great gift and knowledge, and it is trait to share knowledge

  9. Tight is good for the track..but normal driving and pulling will burn up bearings and ring gears. Pinion bearing need to be a little tighter down

  10. I have a 2010 F150 that is making a binding sound when accelerating after turning a corner. Kind of what you get when on drive pavement with the 4wd on, but it's not. It shakes and chatters too then levels out once moving straight and all is fine – no noises. I thought it might be the rear end, but it sounds nothing like what I have seen on YT. I bought a bottle of fluid in case it's low, but now I am thinking it's something else, but what else is there? The back brakes are pretty new. Could it be a wheel bearing? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  11. All the details for this will be in the video of me fucking up and now I’m fixing that.
