A Paul Cangialosi has been working on transmissions for more than 30 years. To say he knows a thing or 2 about transmissions would be beyond understatement. When Paul stopped by the shop to help rebuild the T5 that will be going into my 1979 Fairmont, he asked if I’d like to hear more about the history of the transmission. Of course I said yes and you now have this video covering the history of the longest running manual transmission ever.

Thank you so much. I am thinking about that transmission for my Edsel. I just wonder what the max horsepower rating is for the T5?
Thanx Paul and Eric. I'm swapping a 6.0 liter LS swap into my S10 Xtreme. Looking at transmission options.
Can I install a T5 from a 1994 Mustang 5.0 into a 1990 Mustang 5.0 without any modifications or issues?
Is the t5 better than a nv3500 for sbc on a car?
YOU WANT TO KNOW THE HISTORY OF A BORG WARNER T5 TRANS/DONT WALK AWAY FROM IT/RUN AWAY FROM IT/THEY ARE WEAK JUNK/
Is there a gear set to rise the hp level to 500 hp?
I bought the book great
Nice quick summary.
Thank you
Put a '86 Chevy S-10 -T-5 trans behind my stock engine '53 Chevy pickup. It's like a different truck.
Guys . .anyone .. where can u buy t5 1st, 2nd gear syncro from .. ebey listings are few and far between . . who sells the genuine tremec spec ones ..
Can you make a 4×4 setup for a 1996 Ford F-150 with the 5.0 v8
The T5 was about the best shifting transmission ever. Hundreds of engineering hours were spent on the shape of the ramps between the detents in the guide plate and the angles of the slot (see US Patent 4,338,828, invented by my boss, Hap Ruhlman). It shifted so well that it was too easy to miss 3rd and hit 1st gear when downshifting from 5th and shred the clutch plate. The guide plate or the lever, with its copper (or was it bronze) impregnated "football" was powdered metal part of the year in the middle of the '80s. The T5 was also in the Nissan 300ZX.
Paul is great. Very knowledgeable and a great teacher.
Jeep as well
How about a video of world class T5s vs non world class T5s? There are many misnomers out there that someone like you would be great to settle and squash
What's the successor to t5? What's considered to be a "t6"?
Hey Eric what fluid are u adding to the t-5?
It also came in 1986 cj7 Jeep…
This is same as a chevy t5?
I have so many questions that are probably so stupid but can't seem to find a definitive answer to! I wish I could pick this guy's brain for an hour!
Paul,, T5 has not been around as long as the Super T10,, mid 70s, itself a upgrade on a Muncie 64-74 which was an upgrade on the original T10 from around 1960.
And here in Oz T5s do not have great rep as they explode behind Falcon 6s let alone V8s. And the turbo6 Falcon they were a handgrenade.
Tremic took over in 95 , my 95 cobra had the T5 Tremic
T5 is good transmission for my 1985 Pontiac trans am I goin to auto to manual swap ?
nice camera dude
Well mine just blew the fuck apart…..
do u recommend a wc t5 for 350 small block with street tires AND NO POWERSHIFTING?
Paul Cangialosi , just saw this video, did'nt know of it til a little while ago. You said that it has been around since about 1981. Is it based on the four speed that were in the Mustangs before that? I had two Mustangs, a 1974 and a 1975 that had four speeds that look very similar to the T5. Watched your rebuild of Eric's T5, i say that it was very interesting and well done.
Ok so parden my lack of knowledge but I have a world class t5 out of a 89 camaro rs. the transmission shifts fine and I love it ! but I keep hearing that the t5 is a weak transmission and can't handle much torque. I put it in my 84 camaro with a 3.08 possi axle, 350 for an engine. about 400 hp. what can I do for a rebuild kit to make it stronger its just stock now? and any up grades you recommend.
my Ford falcon xr6 turbo in Australia had a t5z from the factory. anyway I did some minor engine performance enhancements and ended up blowing up this box. same thing has happened to dozens of falcon owners in Australia. from 2005 onwards Ford stopped using the t5 and went to the much stronger t56
Did my 87 tbird turbo couple have a t5? Because when I sold it the car had 220k miles and shifted like brand new.
Paul Cangialosi is so knowledgeable.
