  6. I recall that when a was a boy I would be in my bed and place a transistor radio to next my ears so that I could listen to Vin Scully broadcast the Dodger games. So many times his soothing voice, his pleasing phrases, his always respectful humor and his natural kindness would wash over me like a warm wave, all while he was painting a picture of what was happening on the field and summarizing what was in the hearts of the his listeners.

He also had an uncanny ability to let the bottle breathe. He never talked over a big moment. For him, the sounds of the fans was enough to communicate everything that was happening on the field. In fact, some of his greatest moments were when he said nothing at all but just let the real event do all of the talking.

He had the ability to take baseball and cloak it with a feeling of specialness. It was as if you were sitting in front of a fire and listening to one of the village elders tell you about epic adventures of long ago. And although some battles were won and some battles were lost, Vin Scully made you feel that your heroes – whoever they were – would always rise up and be prepared to fight again, even if it was a doubleheader.

    Thank you, Vin.
