Phil Nickinson, editor-in-chief of Android Central, gives his unvarnished opinion of the brand-new Huawei Mate S smartphone. A 5.5 MLED display on an aluminum body. It’s rocking 1080P display which is decent, until you go outside which can be a problem. Performance is pretty decent with a high silicon kirin 935, which isn’t something we’ll be seeing in North America anytime soon. There is both a 32G model with 3G of RAM, but there will also be a 128G model with Force Touch enabled. The fingerprint scanner is the stand out feature here, especially since we’re waiting for a Huawei Nexus with a fingerprint scanner in the near future. It’s incredibly accurate, and ridiculously fast. With the scanner on the back of the phone it’s always within reach, but does limit which fingers you can use to unlock the Huawei Mate S. Software is still problematic, with notifications and settings are still drastically different than what you’re used to. It’s running Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, and has a 13 MP camera. The camera is decent without being spectacular. Price may be an issue at upwards of $700 US. This is a good phone, but competing with other similar phones that cost as little as half the asking price of the Huawei Mate S might make it less of a competitor. Still, Huawei fans certainly have something to look forward to.
