You may be familiar with the term, but not necessarily the process. This video not only shows what clocking a turbo means, it also shows how to do it.

It’s a simple process really, but it is critical to the longevity of your turbo. If you skip this step, damage to the turbo can result.

I strongly recommend you wait to perform this procedure after you’ve got the engine mounted in the vehicle. That way you’re sure to have it positioned correctly.

  1. You also want little to no crankcase pressure, or the oil will drain even slower and sometimes come out behind the compressor wheel into the intake tract.

    Generally the consensus regarding allowing a turbo to 'wind-down' is to drive out of or at low levels of boost (this is not subjective, low is 1-4psi) for the last 5-10 minutes of your journey as idling is more detrimental than running at low load. With that being said, in the real world it makes very little difference, but when speaking of best practice it's best practice to speak of the best practice (:D) and not the second best.

  7. Hi Eric Love your vids. As always I don't know anything but this, just something on my mind. First I agree with all you say on your video. I got thinking about this and wonder if the oil coming in the turbo have the oil pump pressure? If this is the case won't that pressure coming in push the oil out? Again I believe the what you did it is the way to go but just thinking out loud.

  8. After eight years with a turbo diesel I have either ran wasy the last mile or two untill a stop or let her idle for a few minutes after arrival. I have had no turbo problems.

  9. Another good reason to idle to cool down is the fact that if you immediately shut down a hot turbo, the oil has a tendency to boil due to the extreme turbo temp. Heavy duty diesels such as Caterpillar, Cummins and Detroit recommend it.

  10. Isn't their a device that will circulate the oil (a type of pump) after you turn the engine off? Have you ever thought about that kind of device?

I have no experience from this but from listening to other people… they don't recommend using the filter you have on your turbo because the glue can come loose from heat and the turbo can suck the cap in and destroy the intake fan. Enjoy your videos. Been watching for a few years. Keep up the expert advice.
