In this video I show all the steps needed to install front coil springs and struts into a Ford Fox body. Front coil springs can be a challenge, especially when you don’t have the weight of the engine to help you out. So be prepared for some frustration and effort during your install.

I couldn’t get my spring compressors up into place on this set up. If you’re able to figure out a different method, I’m open to suggestion. I struggled with these springs for quite some time to get them installed. I’m sure you could see the frustration on my face.

  3. Just wondering whether inserting the spring may have been easier without the strut in place? Or were you using the strut as leverage?
    BTW, thanks for that clip! I’m in the process of doing some work on a 1987 T-bird, and this architecture is pretty similar. Awesome job!

  4. @EricTheCarGuy I've got two magic words for you when it comes to suspension coil springs" spring compressor.

    A spring compressor that is properly used will:
    a: Save you time.
    b: SAVE YOUR LIFE.
    c: Or both.

    Not using a spring compressor with this job is quite literally asking for your head to be removed from your shoulders. You got lucky. With as long as you say you've been working on working on cars, shame on you for showing a (front) suspension assembly video such as this. There is never a time when you need to compress a suspension coil spring that you should not use the proper tool for this purpose. Unless you aren't particularly friendly with healthy living that is.

    I've been binging on the #FarimontProject videos of late. This is the first time I've felt this strongly about something you've shown your viewers. Some of the things you've said "I just learned this" have floored me considering how often you claim to have been "a mechanic" for dozens of years and your obvious age from many of your (Python!) references. Much of what you claim to "just now be learning" are things I learned before I entered (Jr.) high school (78 for Jr high, 80 for senior high) and consider pretty basic.

    You mention low profile tires. I learned how to do those on an ancient(by then) Coats 40-40 machine before I was 10, not the Rim Clamp (Coats RC-10/15 of my time) you show in your videos. Next we have you "balancing" the tires/wheels. Have you never heard of "difference splitting" when balancing? I was teaching this at Goodyear stores in the Bay Area when I was 18 in 1984. There is abso-frelling-lutely no reason to use more than one weight on either side of a tire Eric if you even have half a clue as to how to balance tires. Move the dang weight around and trim it/them to change its value.

    Hopefully I'll get to see you at SEMA this year and we can discuss these items in person. Maybe we can also talk about turning some of your videos into articles for me/us.

  5. I know this is a really old video, but you did say something about some people adding suggestions. Any ways I had a family member that often used small ratchet straps to compress and to hold and move in place in tight areas. It worked well for him and he learned it from a racer. Maybe this could help someone out there.

  6. Love that Fairmont, dude! The only new car I ever bought was a '78 Fairmont V8 2-door sedan. At 32,000 miles, I installed a '71 360 HP 429 from a Mercury Marquis Brougham along with the Merc C6 trans. Kept the factory 2.78:1 gears. FAST car! Not sure how quick I could have made it, because the stock tires were not good at all for traction below 15mph or so, which is probably what saved the differential gears…😁

  7. Came here because I got mad when I damn near got the passenger side spring placed in my 68 Skylark resto project when I realized that I put the lower control arms on the wrong sides. In case you don't know some cars, like my A body, have the shock bolts inside the coil spring area which = extreme frustration and bloody knuckles

  8. When I was watching this video, I caught myself chuckling, when you were struggling on the second spring. I feel your pain and have been through the same thing on all the Foxbodies I've worked on. I so badly wanted to throw a wrench or pry bar for you. I use a through the center spring compressor when I do these, but it's a real pain to get the hook end back out from inside the spring as the hole in the lca is too small. Awesome project by the way.

  9. Maximum motor sports has a tool called MMT-8 ( front spring installation tool) it would’ve saved you that headache .

  10. the spindles you used are for a wider track car. the strut angle is different and the ball joint shaft is of a larger diameter. use 94-95 control arms. I learned the hard way when I installed 95 get suspension on my 93 hatch. it will give you about 1.5 to 2 inch wider front track.

  11. Ever been in an airplane hangar, they set a short amount of chain in the cement so you can pull and push at the same time without fear of falling off the jacks. Just a thought
