Here’s a link to the video where I relocated the battery (it’s also the previous video in the series): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IF8cHIjmUY8
If you need to know how to remove and replace a fuel tank in a Ford Fox Body vehicle, this video will help you. While relocating my battery to the trunk, I discovered I needed to drop my fuel tank to gain access to some of the fasteners. I decided to make this video on how to R&R the fuel tank.
With that said, it’s likely I’ll be running a fuel cell in my car sometime in the future. This video will still be helpful if you’re looking to remove or install a fuel tank in your fox body Ford. Just know that I will be doing a future video on the fuel system I’ll be running.

I don't agree with one single thing you did to this car and it bugs me because you did so much good work. Why do you have to put the battery so close to the fuel lines and filling neck and hoses? 🙁 One spark from a cable, gases from the battery, a little vapor leak and…goodbye car. Why, Eric, why. 😐
i hate those CORBIN Ring CLAMPS – RETARDED DESIGN , never realy caught on
When Eric said, "TO THE BENCH GRINDER" I expected to see the 60s Batman scene transition using the EricTheCarGuy logo.
I know this video is old but did the diameter of the fuel line coming off the sending unit cause a restriction of fuel flow? It seems like guys running over 500hp are using 3/8 lines coming off the sending unit.
@4:26 Are you seriously using a chrome fitting with an impact gun?
I cleaned and painted my tank straps, guess I'm crazy to do so.
new engine new trans new suspension and rear end without a new tank i would think that over
you guys remember when eric said his original plans???? HAHAHAHAHA, I'm sure this will be a beast… in a straight line.
I'm installing a fitech and need to run a return vent line not return fuel line but just to the charcoal canister or filler tube or to the tank I have no idea what I'm looking for or if there is one any idea if it's pictured at any point in this video… I'm sorry I e never turned a wrench till this year
you should totally have Regular car Reviews Review it once done!
foxbody mustang 79 to 93
You think a ford paint job is bad? You should see the paint on some 2017 Subarus that come into my work. They don't even paint the engine bays. It's just crude overspray. Same thing with the underbody of the car
Once again for the dummies that don't seem to comprehend that it's only advice on how to make it better and safer I am NOT telling him to build an bloody drag car! It doesn't matter if he never runs it down a track or a drag strip and it's not advice just for Eric but anyone who wants to build a better street car and not have to waste money doing things twice or killing themselves because of some idiot saying you don't need that because it's just a street car.
!
I've had the gas tank out of my motor home at least three times. The rear end up on the rear stabilizing jacks, me on my back (with help) and lowered it down on a trolly jack. 79 gallons approximately. I'm no longer intimidated by the prospect of R&Ring a gas tank. lol hint: when replacing a fuel pump on a 15 year old vehicle replace all the vent lines as well. it will save time and frustration especially when there 3 of them.
Beast!
Can you guide me on a toyota 2c diesel engines? Any thing? It would be helpful as i am new to diesels
Is using inflatable air jack which uses car exhaust for pumping safe for car engine.?
Eric ! The tank is out! do the job right my friend. Good, Better, Best! never let it rest! till your good is better and your better is best, Or as my dad would say (any job worth doing is worth doing right) No dis respect intended young-man. Have a great day
So glad I saw this upload before taking my car to the shop. 88 GT currently leaking fuel from the top of the tank (somewhere).
Only question is if I have enough room to drop it on my jack stands. I'll have to watch this in it's entirety as soon as I have time from work.
Thanks as always, Eric.
On my old Daihatsu I used a Por15/KBS Coatings "Fuel tank kit". It has several chemicals you pour into the tank, roll it around and around and around, then let it air dry for a few days. Then your tank has been acid-rust converted and then etched with a metal-epoxy paint stuff.
Worked really good and wasn't that expensive (well, okay, it was time-wise).
Why did you use white lithium on the connector instead of dielectric? It won't dry out like white lithium does.
Hey Eric, l love the Fairmont videos, I have a question for you. What video editing software do you use or can you recommend one to a beginning YouTuber? Thanks.
where has erick been
Eric. Another great video. I remember removing the leaky gas tank on my 1981 Fairmont wagon. As I recall, it had a mat on top to cushion it against the body. Any water that got into the mat would sit there and cause the top of the tank to rust. That's what happened to mine. I picked up a used tank from a bone yard that looked just about like yours. I realize you said you didn't have time, but there's no way I would have installed it with all of that rust on the top. I made sure there was absolutly no gas or even fumes left in the tank. I got out my wire wheel and took off most of the rust. I sprayed it with Rustoleum metal primer followed by Rustoleum paint. Looked like a new tank when I got through with it and I figured that I probably at least slowed down the rust for the rest of the life of the car. Felt better about re-installing it. Donated the car to a church group when it was 15 years old. Now I can go to heaven.
instead of possibly contaminating tank why didn't you just spray silicone on hose end?
Why not wire wheel the tank down and repaint or undercoat it? Seems like a more permanent solution. I understand you have a fuel cell now, just a thought.
Before you cut the bolt to length leave the nut on the bolt and thread it down. After you cut the bolt and round it over you can back the nut all the way off and it works like a die and straightens any kinked threads. I've been doing it for years for carriage bolts when I build decks and the bolts are too long. Great work by the way Eric. I'm a carpenter but I really enjoy the vids!!
Hey MR. Car Guy. I learned to drive on a 79 Fairmont, almost the same one as yours, just painted rust red. I had to remove the gas tank once, and I have a much easier way to do it. I just had the 2 metal straps rust off, and down came the tank, thank god I was parked both times this happened though. Love the videos, thank you for doing this for us.
A message from the safety police: don't wear torn and flappy gloves around fast-spinning stuff!
has he always had this shop the last time I seen a video of his was when he did the 5.3 swap on the 07 tahoe
At 6:36, whose car are you covering in years and years of road debris?
