This guy is "Mr. Miyagi". I'm 6'1" and about 250 and bought a 44 mag when I was hiking up in Glacier Nat Park as a last ditch bear deterrent. I fired that thing twice before I went, then sold it. Regardless of what you see in the movies, it is like trying to fire a friggin howitzer. If you tried to stop a bear, it might do the trick, but you would have to instruct the charging bear to stop and let you put your earplugs in. Otherwise you will be deaf for several days after you fired it assuming you were alive.
